FALL 2006
WPEA Demands to Bargain Over Uniform
Laundering
Recently, the Military Department stated they
could no longer pay for the laundering and care of the
uniforms required to be worn by the Security Guards. The
Union put in a “Demand to Bargain,” as this involves
changing a long standing working condition.
After two bargaining sessions the Military
Department decided they would continue to launder and pay
for maintenance of the uniform they require Security Guards
to wear.
There is no doubt about the severe budget
crisis at the Military Department. The men who represented
the Security Guards at the table bargained in good faith and
suggested that their bargaining unit would be willing to cut
down on how much the laundering service is used.
If at any time the Department decides they
can’t launder the Security Guards’ uniforms or they
entertain changing any other working condition, they know
they must notify the union and give us a chance to bargain
the changes and impacts.
It is because of strong leaders like those
that participated in these negotiations that the laundering
of Security Guard uniforms was successfully retained.
