We Did It!
Volunteer Fire Fighter Bill Heads to Governor!

On April 4, WPEA Revenue member Nadine Jardine’s hard work finally paid off as SSB 5511 was voted 97-0 in favor of in the House (listen starting at 6:30:0). For over three years, Nadine has been championing to allow state workers who are volunteer firefighters the ability to respond when called to duty. This bill has received wide bi-partisan support receiving not a single “Nay” vote throughout the entire process. With Nadine’s skilled research and partnership with WPEA, this critical bill now sits on Governor Gregoire’s desk for her to sign into law.

Let’s ensure this bill is signed into law!
If you believe that volunteer firefighters are vital to our communities safety,

Tell the Governor SIGN SSB 5511!

Member Nadine Jardine Continues Tenacity on Fire Fighter Bill

Department of Revenue member, Nadine Jardine, continued her advocacy on SSB 5511, which would grant volunteer fire fighters that are state workers, leave when called to duty. Nadine teamed up with WPEA to push this important piece of legislation through and has been thrilled with the great success it has had so far in moving through the legislative process.

Nadine was fabulous once again on Wednesday, March 28,  providing powerful enough testimony to have the bill voted 9-0 out of Committee in the same hearing!

SSB 5511 is now in House Rules and needs to be “pulled’ so that it can make it to the floor for a vote. You can do your part and help Nadine and fellow state workers by contacting your legislators in the House.

WPEA Member Testifies in Support of Critical Bill

On February 22, 2007, Department of Revenue member Nadine Jardine joined WPEA Lobbyist Luis Moscoso (right) and Senator Tim Sheldon in testifying on SB 5511 which would allow state workers who are volunteer firefighters to be granted leave if called to duty. This bill is critical to providing emergency assistance to communities throughout the state. Nadine made a strong case, impressing legislators with her heartfelt testimony that this bill must be passed. WPEA is in strong support of SB 5511 and asks that you contact the Senate Government Operations and Accountability Committee Chair Senator Darlene Fairley and request that this get a Committee vote soon!

Revenue Auditor Settles Long-Standing Grievance

On November 30, 2006, WPEA Staff Rep Lou Baker and now former Revenue Auditor 3 Sally Brooks negotiated a settlement of her grievance with the Department of Revenue. At the request of the agency, Brooks had agreed to a settlement conference mediated by the Public Employment Relations Commission.

In a message to her friends at DOR and elsewhere, Brooks expressed her feelings about the settlement—and about WPEA.

“I wanted to thank all of you for your wonderful support, friendship and love.  I have officially resigned from the DOR and I’m pleased with the settlement.  Please do not ask me about particulars of the agreement, the negotiation process or how much the settlement is for.  I am not able to share any of it with you.  Just know that I am finally satisfied and can now “redefine myself” and move on.

A special thanks to Lou Baker, my Union Rep.  I couldn’t have persevered without you and the Union’s support, Lou...or without the support of the rest of you involved within the Union.  You’re all AWESOME!”

Baker was also pleased with the outcome. “Sally is herself an awesome individual. I was glad to have gotten to know her, and as happy with the settlement as she was.”
