SPRING 2007
SVC Head Start Employee Receives National
Award
WPEA
member Cinthya Fuentes, from Skagit Valley College
Head Start, received the Head Start Early Childhood
Education Award for an Outstanding Graduate during a
ceremony in Washington, D.C. She is a graduate of the
College’s Early Childhood Education program*, and is
currently a center teacher at SVC’s Skagit/Islands Head
Start in Burlington.
“I am extremely proud of Cinthya, and pleased
that her hard work is being recognized at the national
level,” said Dr. Joan Youngquist, Director of
Skagit/Islands Head Start. “She exemplifies the hard work
and dedication all our Head Start employees have towards the
success of children in our programs.”
The award honors three graduates across the
nation who have recently completed their associate or
bachelors’ degrees in Early Childhood Education. One
graduate is chosen from each of the following Higher
Education Institutional types: an Historically Black
College, a Tribally Controlled Institution, and an Hispanic
serving college - which is what Fuentes was honored for.
Chosen from a nationwide pool of candidates
for her leadership in dual language curriculum, Fuentes
success in her degree program, mentorship of other employees
pursuing college degrees, and her application of knowledge
and training in support of Head Start children and families.
She has taught in the inclusive classrooms at
the Burlington-Edison Child Development Center — a
collaborative program between Skagit/Islands Head Start and
the Burlington Edison School District – providing
individualized learning opportunities for children with
special needs and children from low-income families, many
from Spanish speaking homes. She plans to continue her
education working toward a BA degree in Speech Pathology
with a focus on Spanish language acquisition.
“We are pleased that one of our own graduates
is getting this kind of recognition,” said Dr. Marilyn
Chu, Department Chair of the Early Childhood Education
department. “I want to congratulate Cinthya, and all our
Head Start graduates from the last three years, as well as
those who are currently enrolled, for their dedication and
excellent work with young children and their families.”
Congratulations, Cinthya!
