Members Support Union Involvement in AFL-CIO Constituency Groups

“America’s union movement must stand as a model of full inclusion. We cannot ask more of broader society than we are willing to do ourselves. We cannot build a better future for working families without the full strength brought by brothers and sisters of every description. In our hiring, organizing, representation, outreach and leadership, the union movement must embody our goal of equal welcome and equal opportunity for all.”
- from A Diverse Movement Call for Diverse Leadership, Resolution 2, AFL-CIO, 7/25/05

At WPEA's Annual Membership Meeting this past August, the membership overwhelming approved Resolution 19 that would encourage and support the involvement of our membership in the following Washington State Labor Council (WSLC) Constituency Groups:  A. Philip Randolph Institute, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and Pride At Work.

The resolution also calls for the development of a set of diversity principles to guide the WPEA into becoming a model of full inclusion in the labor movement. Members are encouraged to join a new WPEA Diversity and Inclusion Committee that will provide guidance for members in this work as well as support for work undertaken in the constituency groups.

For further information contact Luis Moscoso, WPEA Government Relations Director at (360) 943-1121 x. 119 (or call toll-free at 1-800-544-9732). He can provide further information on how to join one of the WSLC constituency groups listed above, or go to www.aflcio.org/aboutus/allies/constituencies.cfm to learn more.
