Collective Bargaining Update

Higher Education
Management submitted their initial proposals on June 10, and bargaining began in earnest on June 11.  After the two-day bargaining session, the parties had tentatively agreed to 26 articles.

With the easy stuff” now out of the way, the parties entered into fruitful discussions on a number of more difficult issues.  The next session is scheduled for June 25 and 26.

Yakima Valley Community College
Bargaining continued at YVCC on Monday, June 16.  The parties have made tremendous progress.  Both are hopeful that at the end of Mondays’ session they will be within reach of a final contract.

General Government
We submitted our initial proposals on May 27 and await the employer’s initial proposals at the next session on June 18.  Bargaining will begin in earnest either that day or on June 19.  The initial exchanges with the management team went very smoothly.  We fully expect negotiations will be carried on in the same professional, respectful manner with which they began.

Special Note on Ground Rules
We have received several requests for copies of the ground rules and proposals from members not participating in bargaining. The ground rules prohibit distribution of these materials outside of the bargaining team for the following reasons:

  • If contracts aren’t funded by the Legislature and we end up back at the bargaining table, public knowledge of our proposals places them under added pressure and scrutiny by our opposition.

  • If management obtained proposals before negotiations, it could weaken our position at the bargaining table.

“Recent legal actions and ongoing political issues relating to bargaining must be weighed in the balance,” added lead negotiator Lou Baker, “hence our agreement to keep the proposals and discussions confidential."
