Job Representatives Wear Many Hats
WPEA is stronger and negotiates better
contracts when members are active and united to address
workplace issues. One way to keep informed and be active is
by becoming a WPEA Job Representative.
Under your Master
Bargaining Agreement, only the Job Representatives
are recognized as workplace representatives of the union,
and we are no longer limited to how many members can be Job
Representatives.
Job Representatives not only assist with
grievances and represent coworkers in disciplinary meetings,
but they also do the following to advocate for positive
changes at the worksite:
-
Keep co-workers informed of union
policies, activities, and current events.
Post union information on the workplace bulletin board,
hand out union materials from meetings, do weekly desk
visits to share union news and updates.
-
Attend and encourage attendance at
monthly District Meetings.
Invite members to the Annual Membership Meeting, as well
as any labor/union education programs that might be
available to members.
-
Listen to member issues and determine
the best course of action.
If you don’t feel comfortable handling their issue,
refer them to WPEA staff.
-
Inform members of WPEA services.
Encourage members to take advantage of these
services and refer them to the WPEA web site for more
information.
-
Encourage political action and support
of WPEA’s Leg-PAC fund.
Become a member of the Legislative-Political Action
Committee and an active supporter yourself.
-
Report items of general interest to
WPEA.
Communication is a two-way street – let your WPEA
Staff Rep know when issues arise in the workplace.
-
Welcome new hires.
Inform, educate, and help new members understand the
importance of strong, active union membership.
-
Investigate and report possible
contract violations.
Let your WPEA Staff Representative know immediately
if you believe the contract is being violated. You are
the eyes and ears of the workplace!
