Delegate Convention Ballots are now out for voting and many may be wondering, “What do the delegates do at convention?” or even “What is the Convention?” Let us break it down.
The convention, which occurs every five years is an opportunity for UFCW members to come together, debate issues and take back organizing tools to their respective communities.
The convention brings together UFCW delegates from across North America. These delegates represent over 1.3 million UFCW members. During the convention an election is held for the officers of the UFCW. Action is also taken to deliberate on the steps needed to strengthen the UFCW’s base of member activists who are at the forefront of creative organizing campaigns, engaged collective bargaining programs and political activism.
This is the only time that changes can be made to the International Constitution through the submittal of proposals and amendments. All changes must be voted on by the delegate body.
The delegates attend meetings and workshops to not only learn new skills for themselves, but to learn fresh ideas that they take back to their units, agencies, and colleges. The workshops are designed to educate and inform the delegates about the labor movement and to share effective ideas about how to strengthen and grow union membership.
The guest speakers range from local elected officials to nationally elected congressional leaders and there is a formal ball on the closing night of the convention.
Written testimony from a delegate that attended the 2013 Convention is shown below:
I was lucky enough to attend the convention five years ago and was sorry I was not paying enough attention in November to express my interest in going again.
It is an incredible process to be a voting delegate in such a powerful organization. It is certainly not a fun and games vacation. There is so much work each day of the convention.
There were also incredible workshops to attend that were provided for us. Not to forget the incredible speakers that graced our presence each and every day. Do not forget, these folks our WPEA delegates are not getting paid to go but must use their vacation hours which shows commitment and dedication to all of their Union Brothers and Sisters.
Please support the members that will attend the Convention and engage with them to learn all the ideas and education they received from the workshops.
