WPEA Board Endorses
State Candidates

At the Oct 4 board meeting in Pasco, the Executive Board voted to support the following candidates in various races across the state. These endorsements were made based on the candidates understanding of our Union’s issues, staff interaction, likelihood of winning, and strength of conviction.
Every year we hear that this is the most important election of our lifetime, and this year it seems to be true. We encourage every member to support these candidates because they are the most likely to support us once they are in office.

Salary Increases in WPEA's New Contracts Finalized!

October 2, 2008--The conclusion of bargaining both the WPEA General Government and WPEA Higher Education Master Agreements was accomplished September 30th with the application of WPEA’s “me too” agreements on compensation.

As it turned out, both our General Government and Higher Ed members will receive the same salary adjustments:  a 2.2 percent increase on July 1, 2009, and a 2 percent increase on January 1, 2011.  This compares with the 2.0/2.0 percent effective September 1st of each year bargained by most other general government unions.  The 2.2 percent July 1, 2009 and 2 percent January 1, 2011 increases will result in slightly greater actual wage increases for our members over the life of the agreements, as well as a slightly higher salary level going into the next round of bargaining.

WPEA’s “me too” agreements expired upon their implementation.  Please note that the agreements were limited to the percentage increases and the effective dates of those increases, not to any other provision of any other contract.

Given the array of compensation packages negotiated during this bargaining cycle, we are pleased to have negotiated raises for our members as high or higher than other unions bargaining with the State under RCW 41.80.  The contracts will next go to the legislature for an “up or down” vote on funding.
