STTACC Award Winner

Taken from Janet Parker's, District 10 Vice President, Nomination

Picture
Kristi Daniels won this years Exemplary Classified Staff Award at the Region A STTACC. The following is taken from Janet Parker’s nomination introduction of Christie:

“Our Region A winner has an unusual job title: “Coordinator of Financial Support & Outreach.”

This dedicated professional greets students at the college’s Welcome Center, helps them with the Financial Aid process and with navigating the campus resources that are so important for their success. Our award winner has been involved with numerous functions on campus, has helped arrange entertainment events, and even put together something called a Music-gram fundraiser to benefit the college’s Staff Development & Training committee.

It’s a position that requires lots of expertise and equal measures of empathy and people skills.
After being at GHC for 11 years (this October) and worked in financial aid with various job duties, she feels her strength and what she enjoys most is working directly with students helping to connect the dots.

As this person’s nominator wrote: “I have even observed her follow an upset student out of a building, where she was able to calm and converse with the student out in the courtyard.  She takes pride in her work, and makes sure that students have the tool box of
information at their fingertips to navigate through Financial Aid. She is an upbeat, positive person who is crucial as the first contact person students see in the college’s Welcome Center.”

Our winner is musically talented, dedicated to her job and an energetic contributor to her college’s staff training committee. Due to her involvement with students and hearing some of their stories and situations, she felt the need to try and do more for students and their success. So, she and her fiancé began a scholarship through their program called Play It Forward. They accept and donate instruments to others with no strings attached and provide music to various community and private events. They allow the Grays Harbor College Foundation to manage the application process and choose the recipient. This scholarship is aimed at students who are pursuing music or arts, with a preference given for unaccompanied youth. They have funded 4 $1,000 scholarships since beginning last year and plan to continue this endeavor.”
