I work in a Washington Public Employees Association represented position in Washington State. I am writing to you today because your Higher Education representatives are currently bargaining a successor contract with the WPEA for the 2023-2025 biennium. It has been brought to my attention that the Office of Financial Management, who represents you in contract negotiations, is not meeting their legal obligation to bargain in good faith.
As you know, the past two years have been very difficult for the classified staff at our Higher Education institutions. Our working conditions have become more dangerous due to a global pandemic, our workload has significantly increased, and our moral and job security have significantly decreased. Our wages have always been behind prevailing wage for the work that we do, but with inflation at an all-time high, and the lack of meaningful cost of living adjustments, this gap continues to grow. The Union’s team is actively working on improving these issues and your bargaining representative has delayed and avoided the kind of meaningful negotiations that will help resolve at least some of these issues.
I am asking that you ensure that your bargaining representative puts the time and attention necessary into completing these negotiations. Please ask your bargaining representative to stop delaying and to show up prepared to meaningfully bargain with the WPEA.
