UNITE HERE, the Union of hospitality workers, is fighting for a just economic recovery from the pandemic. Some hotels have made daily room cleaning optional but housekeepers want to clean and sanitize rooms every day. Hotels shouldn’t use COVID-19 as an excuse to cut guest services and jobs. UNITE HERE estimates that ending daily housekeeping would eliminate up to 39% of all U.S. hotel housekeeping jobs and cost housekeepers – overwhelmingly women of color – $4.8 billion in annual lost wages. It also makes a housekeeper’s job even more painful, because rooms are much dirtier after days without cleaning. Workers and housekeepers are asking the community to opt into daily housekeeping whenever you stay at a hotel and use the Fair Hotel tipping guide. In general, Fair Hotel is a great resource for finding and information on supporting Union hotels.
We look forward to your participation in the 66th Annual Convention of the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO!
